Experience Egypt: guide from a local

desert friend

When most people think about Egypt they think pyramids, desert, and camels. And while all that is true, there’s so much more to it than people think.

Egypt is a country that is so rich in history and culture. Filled with so many fascinating wonders and breathtaking landscapes. And whether you are interested in diving into the history or soaking up the beachy sun. Egypt has something for everyone.

As an Egyptian, I’ve experienced many of it’s wonders firsthand.

So, here are some of my recommendations for your next trip.

Cairo, the capital of Egypt is truly a city that never sleeps. The city blends its history and present with both old and new existing side by side.

If you’re a first-time visitor, seeing the Great Pyramids of Giza should definitely be on your list. Have and authentic Egyptian breakfast at a restaurant located within the grounds. Explore them in detail with a horse or camel ride and even enter The Great Pyramid to see the King’s chamber. (This is however not recommended for anyone bothered by tight spaces – it’s very steep and narrow).

Muhammad Ali Mosque

While you’re still in Cairo, you can visit the Citadel. It is located in the heart of Cairo and has a rich history of being a fortress to protect from invaders. In the Citadel you can enter the Muhammad Ali Mosque and get beautiful views of old town Cairo.

You can also take a nighttime sailboat ride on the Nile River and visit the Khan al Khalili bazaar; filled with locally crafted and handmade Egyptian goodies and souvenirs.

Another must visit in Cairo is the Egyptian Museum. Home to a large collection of artifacts and antiquities, with exhibits ranging from Tutankhamun’s collection, mummies, and hieroglyphics.

Now, let’s talk about the beach.

Egypt has some of the most stunning beaches you will ever see.

Blue Lagoon (Dahab)

The Red Sea located in the Eastern Coast of Egypt is known for its crystal-clear waters, stunning marine life and magnificent coral reefs. Filled with seaside resorts and beaches, it is home to divers and snorkelers from around the world coming to experience this underwater world.

One of the more popular diving destinations in the Red Sea is Dahab’s Blue Hole. Located in the South Sinai Peninsula, Dahab has stunning crystal-clear turquoise beaches. Take a boat from the mainland and spend a day at the blue lagoon and take a kite surfing lesson. You can also hike Mount Sinai, go on an ATV ride within the mountains and hangout at the local markets and cafes. Dahab has something for everyone to enjoy.

Also located in the Red Sea, El Gouna is a resort town with a variety of activities. Filled with beach clubs and restaurants, it is a destination to some of the best water in the Red Sea. You can rent a yacht style boat and go island hoping within the sea – where you might be lucky enough to swim with a flock of dolphins.

The Red Sea (Hurghada)

Moving up to the Northern coast of Egypt, the Mediterranean is another gorgeous sea destination. Cities like Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh are rich in history and heritage, and offer a variety of activities.

In Marsa Matrouh you can enjoy white sandy beaches, clear waters and beautiful sunsets. Head to resort towns like Almaza Bay to rent jet skis, swim in a calm sea and enjoy what the nightlife has to offer.

There are so many other things and places that Egypt has to offer – like;

Taking a Nile Cruise from Luxor to Aswan

Visiting the Siwa Oasis

And taking a diving course in Marsa Alam.

No matter what you hear, Egypt isn’t an unsafe travel destination. However just like anywhere else you might go it’s important to do your research and be aware of your locations.

Egypt is a beautiful country with a lot to offer from history, culture and beauty.
